Farnborough
Under 9's
After a successful year in Under 8’s we move up into
Under 9’s ready to undertake our first season of contact
rugby. The emphasis very much remains on inclusion and enjoyment.
This can be a demanding year with the step up from tag rugby
not to be underestimated. The key aspect this year is to
build the childrens’ confidence and to ensure they
understand that contact rugby is both safe and fun.
Whilst children will be encouraged and cajoled into tackling
and contact, each child will be allowed to develop at their
own rate and at any time any child will have the option
of observing rather than participating to help build their
confidence. It should be noted however in the interests
of safety and fairness to the other players, tournament
squads will be chosen from players that have shown both
the confidence and temperament for contact rugby during
training. Hopefully this ‘carrot’ will give
all of our players a goal to aim for.
Currently we have a strong and competitive squad of 20
players and are always looking to grow. All players, of
any standard are welcome to come along and train with us
for a few weeks before deciding to make a commitment. We
aim to ensure that where needed, one-to-one tuition will
be provided to make sure that basic skills and contact play
are brought up a level whereby any child can play in a safe
environment with the more experienced members of our squad.
Coaching:
We will continue to expand upon the basics such as evasion,
handling and decision making and begin to add increased
emphasis on;
• Tackling - from the front, side and rear
• Contact skills – rucking and mauling
• Positional awareness - in both offence and defence
• Set plays through uncontested 3 man scrummages and
line-outs
• Understanding of the Laws of Contact Rugby
In addition we will also work on group skills, and in
particular the differences between forward and back play
with a rotation to ensure all children get to experience
all positions on the field.
Please remember to bring the appropriate
equipment and clothing for the conditions. Scrum caps and
body armour are optional but gum-shields are mandatory and
boots with proper aluminium rugby safety studs should be
worn. Tracksuit bottoms must not have any zips!
Finally, Farnborough Rugby Club is very much
a family orientated club and aside from the playing side
we have a vibrant club-house for parents and children alike
with events throughout the year.
