- “Go 4 it!” – a day of family fun
An action-packed day of family fun and activities will
be on offer as the popular “go for it!” event
returns to Farnborough on Saturday June 12.
Gladiator duels and sumo wrestling are among the more
unusual activities on offer at the family day at Farnborough
Rugby Club in Tile Barn Close.
More traditional activities to have a go at include football,
rugby, tennis, dance and martial arts. Plus there will be
a bouncy castle, arts and craft, face painting and much
more.
The event, from 10am to 4pm is suitable for all the family
but especially aimed at children and young people.
It is being organised by the Safer Rushmoor Partnership,
which includes Rushmoor Borough Council and the police.
Councillor Stephen Masterson, Cabinet Member for Safety
and Regulations at Rushmoor Borough Council says: “The
event is free with lots of clubs and societies offering
displays and taster sessions for local people.
The event is important, as the day brings all the community
together and shows what there is on offer in the local area.
Farnborough Rugby Club will be providing a barbecue all
day for a small charge and there will be a rugby tournament
with schools.”
PCSO Lynn Anderson who is also involved with organising
the event, said: “Often youngsters are looking for
things to do and this event will showcase some of the interesting
things going on in the local area for people to take part
in. We will be asking people to try something new and maybe
get involved in a new group or sport. There will be static
displays, interactive stands and taster sessions organised
throughout the day.”
Parking will be limited on site so organisers are suggesting
that people walk to the event.

Farnborough U7s claim grand slam of tournament
wins
IT has been a remarkable season for Farnborough Rugby
Club’s U7s.
The
side went through the whole season unbeaten, picking up
the following trophies along the way: The Guildford Festival,
The Reading Festival, The Hampshire Plate (joint winners),
The Staines Festival and The Weybridge Vandals Festival.
In all, the side won 29 games and drew three. At the end
of last season, only a few U7 players remained, as almost
the entire squad, plus coaches, prepared to move up to the
U8s.
By the time the season started, player numbers and ability
were looking good, with a number of enthusiastic parents
soon became coaches. The training sessions grew in structure
and content.
By the time of the first festival (Guildford, five weeks
into the season) the team had been looking pretty effective
during training, albeit untested in tournament.
At Guildford, Farnborough Battersea 6-5 in the final,
despite being two points down at half-time. Exactly two
weeks later, they were winners of the Reading Festival,
beating each team clearly by at least three points.
From that time until the Hampshire Festival, training
continued in earnest, player numbers swelled and every opposing
team were beaten, both home and away.
On the coaching front, a number of coaches took part in
the RFU Level 1 Coaching Course, which provided some great
ideas and further insight into coaching.
During the five or so weeks leading up to the Hampshire
Festival, the squad trained hard in preparation for what
we considered to be the most important on the fixtures list.
Everyone knew they’d be playing against the toughest
teams in the county and that it wasn’t going to be
easy. The squad were put through their paces in all respects
and rose to the challenge with smiles on their faces and
determination in their eyes. Enthusiasm and team spirits
were high.
The squad played their hearts, out winning three and drawing
three, to finish as joint-winners. One week later they kept
up the momentum by becoming the Staines Festival winners.
As always on the day, the squad retained their quiet confidence
and behaved well. During matches never did they once let
their guard slip or underestimate the opposition they faced.
The team won against each opposing team by at least four
points, thanks to some superb displays. Then, as a finale
at the end of season, they achieved a double success.
First, they were the ‘Wasps Tag Challenge’
winners. This involved playing Slough RFC during the London
Wasps against Gloucester match halftime interval at Adams
Park in front of a full house of 10,000 fans.
Farnborough played wonderful rugby to win by four tries
to one. The next day, they became Weybridge Vandals winners
by beating Teddington in the final 4-1.
The stars of the seasons — the players — were:
Aaron ‘Dynamo’ Mead — A nippy player,
always in the thick of the action.
Alex ‘Bulldog’ Phipps — With dogged
determination, is keen to forge ahead well into the opposition's
area.
Alex ‘Jonah Lomu’ Young – A very experienced
player with great skill and speed.
Angus ‘Tag Master’ Murray — A cheerful
player who, when it comes to the crunch, will attempt to
ram himself through the smallest of spaces.
Cameron ‘Tiger’ Corry- Thomas — A popular
player who enjoys the fun of the attack.
Catrin ‘Secret Weapon’ Williams — Looks
can be very deceiving with this player. With ball in hands,
a very difficult attacker to catch.
Chelsea ‘Tap Dance’ Parkes — A happy
player who has been known to scare off the opposition with
her tap dancing routines.
Chontice ‘Dynamite’ Kerridge — Great
at blasting through defensive lines.
Gemma ‘Gemstone’Minshaw — A new addition
to the squad, this keen player cuts like a diamond blade
through a defensive line.
Harvey ‘Wingman’ Williams — A lightweight
runner who can often be found running down the wings, millimeters
from the touch line.
Isaac ‘Stealth’ Johns — One of our quieter
players but when ball is in hands, actions speak louder
than words.
Jack ‘Red Devil’ Murphy — A great bulldog
contender, we were desperate to put into a competition when
he turned six.
Louis ‘The Leopard’ Thomas— This nimble
player is great at flying through defensive lines.
Louise ‘Sunshine’ Murphy — A popular
member of the squad, always playing with a smile.
Oliver ‘Showman’ Williams — Enjoys the
limelight of the field during a game, this player likes
to please the crowd.
Phillipa ‘Terrier’ Farmer — A very experienced
and tough player.
Rowan ‘Soprano’ Walker — A great choice
of captain, this ‘veteran’ of U7s can usually
be heard on the next field when she calls her team into
position.
Sam ‘Scrabbler’ Lalondrelle - — Often
found in the thick of the action, this experienced player
is always one of the first to get his hands dirty.
Sam ‘Legs’ Wakefield — A player that
has improved dramatically over the season.
William ‘Tornado’ Masters —So named
after his trademark running style, elbows out, ready for
takeoff.
U6 players whp played for the U7s included: Beau ‘Rocket’
Bravington-Turner, Ben ‘Zoom’ Walton, Benny
‘Whizz’ Robinson, George ‘Scrum Cap’
Pierson-Lovesy, Jack ‘Speedy Gonzalez’ Haddock
and Ryan ‘Rhino’ Young.
The Under 7s section would not have been such a success
without its coaching team:
Amanda, team manager; Lee Young, head coach; and coaches
Adrian Williams, Garin Phipps, George Masters, Jason Murray
(head coach for U7s in season 2009/10), John Haddock, Mal
Murphy, Max Lalondrelle, Steve Masters, Steve Turner.
After three seasons involved with the Under 7s, Lee Young
moves up to coach the current squad at U8s level. The current
year R/year 1 squad that will be staying down in the U7s
are a force to be reckoned with, many of which have played
equally alongside the older players during the festival
successes.
Oldies Raise Game For Charity
Farnborough News : Star W/E 07 November 2008
The Farnborough Golden Oldies (made up from Farnborough Rugby Club's
Minis & Juniors Parents and coaches) played a charity match against Old
Guildfordians parents and coaches on Sunday 2^nd November in aid of the
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
Referee Andrew Cox (from Phyllis Tuckwell) blew his whistle for the kick
off at 1pm and the Guildfordians kicked the ball to Farnborough.
The game, as always with these two teams was in the spirit of rugby,
with some great "champagne" rugby being shown to the large crowd that
had gathered at FRFC's ground in Tile Barn close.
Farnborough scored the first try with some slick passing form the backs,
with a conversion by under 14s coach Alex Stewart (ex-captain of the
FRFC First XV) saw the home side with an early seven points for their
efforts.
With a few more tries for the home team and a brilliantly worked try by
the visitors saw the first quarter's score at 19 -- 5 .
The game was played in four 20 minutes quarters with a drop of fine Port
consumed at each quarter to ease the game along (and no doubt numb some
pain).
The match continued with a crowd pleasing display of skills, if not
speed! Half time saw FRFC's Chairman Ivan Norris take the field of play
for another of his "last game I will play boys".
At the referees final whistle the score was 75 -- 10 to the Golden Oldies.
Mini and junior chairman Simon Windle said "this was a great match and
we have raised nearly £300 pounds, £102 coming from our visitors Old
Guildfordians. We have a return match in January where we hope to raise
further money before our charity dinner where we hold a raffle and auction"
